The opening site was an old lumber camp (45[degrees] 42' 13" N, 78[degrees] 15' 9.5" W) with ground vegetation <0.3 m high and comprised of scattered grasses, sweet fern (Comptonia peregrina), bracken (Pteridium aquilinum), and blueberry (Vaccinea sp.); trees were limited to red pine (Pinus resinosa) and white spruce (Picea glauca) <3 m high and present in 11% of plots.
The most common shrub species were Amelanchier stolonifera, Clethra alnifolia, Comptonia peregrine, Ilex verticillata, Kalima angustifolia, Myrica gale, Rosa multiflora, Sambucus Canadensis, Spirea tomentosum, Vaccinium corymbosum, and Viburnum dentatum.
State-listed endangered Comptonia peregrina (sweet fern), Hypericum adpressum (shore Saint John's-wort), Polygonum careyi (Carey's smartweed), Rubus setosus (bristly blackberry), Sisyrinchium atlanticum (eastern blue-eyed grass), and Viola primulifolia (primrose violet) were observed.
