Observations on the life cycles of painted turtles (genus
Chrysemys).
In order of abundance the seven species of turtles currently inhabiting the lake are painted turtle (
Chrysemys picta marginate), snapping turtle (Chelydra serpentina), red-eared slider (Trachemys scripta elegans), spiny soft shell turtle (Trionyx spiniferus), map turtle (Grapteinys geographica), Blanding turtle (Emydoidea blandingii), and stinkpot turtle (Sternotherus odoratus).
Germano (1994) used upper decile estimates of asymptotic size for testudinid turtles and the approach corresponds closely to the previous study in which an average of 10.6% (range 7.1-12.8%) of the data were used to constrain asymptotic sizes for four
Chrysemys picta data sets (Lindeman, 1997a).

Examples include Kinosternon subrubrum, Trachemys scripta scripta, and Deirochelys reticularia (Gibbons, 1987; Frazer et al., 1990, 1991a); Chelydra serpentina (Galbraith and Brooks, 1987; Congdon et al., 1994);
Chrysemys picta (Frazer et al., 1991b); Kinosternon flavescens (Iverson, 1991); and Emydoidea blandingii (Congdon et al., 1993; Herman et al., 1994).
Painted turtles (
Chrysemys picta) at sewage ponds in Maryland had enhanced rates of growth and males matured in 2 years compared to 4 years in a nearby natural pond (Ernst and McDonald, 1989), and in Idaho, turtles had a greater percentage of juveniles, grew faster, and had significantly larger clutches than turtles from a lake in a wildlife refuge (Lindeman, 1996).
The Weber I Site (Smith and Egan 1990), located in the southeastern tip of Saginaw County, has yielded only a single turtle species,
Chrysemys picta, from the Middle Archaic assemblage and "cf.
Rowe (1995) previously demonstrated a significant positive correlation between hatchling size and maternal size in the painted turtle (
Chrysemys picta).
The development of melanism in an Oklahoma population of
Chrysemys scripta elegans (Reptilia: Testudinidae).
In order of abundance the six species of turtles are Painted Turtle (

Second, some species found on the Lake Erie islands (Ambystoma jeffersonianum, Plethodon cinereus, Bufo americanus, Hyla versicolor, Pseudacris crucifer,
Chrysemys picta, Elaphe vulpina, Nerodia sipedon, Thamnophis sirtalis) have colonized islands in the upper Great Lakes that were formerly inundated by high water levels (King, 1988b).
