In this study group, 55% of men and 57% of women ages 50 to 60 had an estimated age younger than their
chronological age. "These patients were clearly doing the right things to preserve their health--which, in many cases, probably included exercising," says Dr.
Velandria said that when they conducted a metabolic age calculation among more than 5,000 business process outsourcing (BPO) employees in Metro Manila, 60 percent were determined to have a lower metabolic age than their
chronological age. Around 35 percent of those between 18 to 50 years old also had low bone mass.
The findings, led by researchers from the Washington University School of Medicine in St Louis, showed that women's brains appear to be about three years younger than men of the same
chronological age, metabolically speaking.
The Pearson correlation test shows a high correlation index (0.9) (p < 0.001) between estimated and
chronological age and a coefficient of determination ([R.sup.2]) of 0.81, indicating that there is a strong correlation between estimated age and age at death.
To predict age, authors extracted a number of features from the sleep EEG and created a model to predict BA comparing against
chronological age.
"Paradoxically, even though a woman's biological age was higher with each child that she had, if a woman was pregnant when the measurements were taken, her epigenetic age, and to a lesser extent her telomeres, looked 'younger' than predicted for her
chronological age," Kuzawa said.
The study, which used MRI to assess brain volume and cortical thickness, found that only a single FLE caused the brain to appear one-third of a year older than the person's
chronological age. Future studies will need to include women and a broader ethnic mix to better understand the impact of FLEs on brain aging.
The university's psychology division is carrying out the research project, named SAND - Schooling Across Neurocognitive Development - which will compare the development of children born in January and February 2014 who are identical in
chronological age but form two groups, those who enter school and those who stay in kindergarten but enter school one year later.
In the first year of secondary school pupils aged 11 are reading one year less than their
chronological age, the study found.
"Where in other regions book difficulty levels rise sharply each year of primary school, meaning that primary pupils are typically reading markedly more advanced books for their
chronological age - in Wales primary pupils are barely reading above their
chronological age."
In soccer, the
