The Invisible College

The oldest national scientific society in the world is the Royal Society of London for Improving Natural Knowledge—known simply as the Royal Society. First founded in 1660 by a group of natural philosophers who met to promote scientific discussion, the Royal Society now ranks as the foremost organization of its kind. At least 14 years before its founding, the organization existed as an unofficial group whose members referred to it as the "Invisible College." Who were they? More...

Saint Wenceslas Murdered by His Brother (935 CE)

During his reign, the Good King Wenceslaus, as he was known, was noted for his piety and worked vigorously to strengthen Christianity in Bohemia. His religion and his friendly relations with King Henry I—with whom he had negotiated a peace when Henry invaded—caused discontent among the nobles, and Wenceslaus was assassinated by his brother Boleslav I, who succeeded him. By the 11th century, he was already recognized as the patron saint of Bohemia. What legends exist about the saintly king? More...

According to tradition, he compiled or edited what corpus of books? More...
Quotation of the Day
The history of human conduct does not warrant that exalted opinion of human virtue which would make it wise in a nation to commit interests of so delicate and momentous a kind, as those which concern its intercourse with the rest of the world, to the sole disposal of a magistrate.

Alexander Hamilton (1755-1804)

Confucius's Birthday (2023)

This is a time to commemorate the birth of the teacher Confucius, perhaps the most influential man in China's history. In Qufu, Shandong Province, China, the birthplace of Confucius, there is a two-week-long Confucian Culture Festival. During the Cultural Revolution in the late 1960s, Red Guards defaced many of the buildings in Qufu. They have since been restored, and the festival held there attracts scholars from China and abroad. The festival opens with a ceremony accompanied by ancient music and dance and includes exhibitions and lectures on the life and teachings of Confucius. More...
