Article of the Day

Naos

Though technically classified as a blue supergiant, Naos is not a particularly large star, with a radius only about 11 times larger than that of our Sun. It is, however, an exceptionally hot and bright star—one of the brightest in the Milky Way Galaxy. It is noted for its unusually fast rotation and extremely strong stellar wind. While Reagan was hospitalized, Secretary of State Alexander Haig made a controversial statement about presidential succession. What did he say? More...

What iconic painting did van Gogh complete while in a mental hospital? More...

Spiritual Baptist Liberation Day (2023)

This national holiday, instituted in 1996, honors an African-American religious sect once outlawed in Trinidad and Tobago. The Spiritual Baptists originally came to the islands as former American slaves. Their style of worship combines African and Baptist beliefs and practices, and services include bell ringing and shouting. In 1917, the government forbade the group from practicing their religion; this law was overturned in 1951. Their national holiday honors the Spiritual Baptists' long struggle against religious persecution. It is observed with speeches and religious services. More...
