Lev ShestovShestov was a Ukrainian-born existentialist philosopher. Inspired by Friedrich Nietzsche and Søren Kierkegaard, Shestov sought knowledge through ungrounded subjective thought instead of objective reason. He combined his existentialism with a religious outlook that emphasized a belief in the value of the human struggle. Taipei 101 Becomes World's Tallest Building (2003)On October 17, 2003, a pinnacle placed atop Taiwan's Taipei 101 allowed it to surpass the height of what had once been the tallest buildings in the world—the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia—by 184 feet (56 m). Designed to withstand typhoons and earthquakes, Taipei 101 houses a massive pendulum suspended from the 92nd floor to counteract swaying. Anniversary of the Death of Jean-Jacques Dessalines (2022)A former slave, Jean-Jacques Dessalines (ca. 1758–October 17, 1806) played a pivotal role under the command of Toussaint L'Ouverture in the Haitian struggle for independence from France. Dessalines ruled Haiti as Emperor Jacques I for two years before he was assassinated in a coup. It is Dessalines' legacy as a freedom fighter and a founding father that Haitians remember on this official holiday commemorating the anniversary of his death.
